Alan J. Berkowitz

This world has many skilled architects. And many bright engineers. Alan Berkowitz is part of a rare breed of individuals who are both.

After earning degrees in both disciplines from the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Alan has built a unique career that today allows him to use his full range of skills on one-of-a-kind residential projects.

Alan began his professional career in Kansas City, Mo., as a project architect on commercial and historic renovation projects. A skilled carpenter and hands-on builder, he later formed his own design/build firm in Kansas City. Specializing in the restoration of older residential properties, he became adept at assessing structural integrity, designing solutions, drawing architectural plans, and then building what he designed.

In the early 1980’s, Alan returned to St. Louis, his hometown, to join his family’s furniture manufacturing business. For 13 years he led a design and engineering team that earned five patents for new products they developed — and learned the fine art of innovation in the process.

His heart, however, was still in residential design. So, in 1994 he returned to his roots and founded Berkowitz Design. Very detail-oriented by nature, he today oversees each of his projects from inception through completion. Drawing on his 30 years of architectural, engineering and field experience, he is known for producing standout architectural design that is both beautiful and buildable.

Alan is a licensed Architect in the state of Missouri and a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). He has served on the Board of Adjustment, City of Clayton. He is also an avid reader, fly fisherman, pianist and composer. In addition to spending his free time with his family and dog, he also usually has at least one construction project underway in his own home.
